Dental Insurance Check Kit
Take Medi-Cal? Tricare? Delta Dental? Know before you book.
“We accept most insurance” tells you almost nothing. Whether a visit costs you $0 or $400 turns on questions most people don't know to ask — network tier, per-provider enrollment, downgrades, waiting periods. Pick your plan and get the exact script.

Your Delta Dental verification kit
Read this to the front desk, in order
- “Are you IN-NETWORK for my specific Delta Dental plan — not just 'we accept it'?” (Accepting an out-of-network plan means they'll bill it, but you may pay much more.)
- “Which network tier? My card says the exact network name.” (Carriers run multiple networks; in-network for one tier can be out for yours.)
- “Will you verify my benefits before the first visit and tell me my annual maximum, deductible, and what percentage my plan pays for the treatment I need?”
- “If a treatment is downgraded by the plan — say a white filling paid as a metal one — do you bill me the difference?” (This is the most common surprise bill.)
- “Are there waiting periods on my plan for major work?”
Before you book
- Get the answers in writing — ask them to note network status and estimates on the treatment plan.
- Call your carrier too (member services number on the card) and ask the SAME network question. If the answers differ, believe the carrier.
- Write down your annual maximum and what you've used this year — timing major work across two plan years is often the biggest saver available.
- Ask for a pre-treatment estimate (predetermination) for anything major; carriers process these free and it locks expectations.
Why these questions
Every question above targets a specific way “we take your insurance” goes wrong: carrier accepted but network tier mismatched, practice enrolled but your dentist isn't, plan accepted for existing patients only, coverage quoted without the downgrade clause. Offices aren't being dishonest — the front desk answers the question asked. These are the right questions.
This kit is generic patient-education knowledge about how dental insurance verification works, personalized only by your own selections (plan family, who it's for, what you need) — nothing here was generated from data about you, and nothing you select leaves this device. We keep no directory of dentists, receive no referral fees, and recommend no provider: the kit exists to make YOUR calls effective. Plan rules vary by employer group and contract; your plan documents and your carrier's member-services answer always control.
